Noko which means beautiful in function and design was born on a Gippsland puppy farm. She is a Golden Retriver x Poodle bred down to the size of a miniature poodle, without any thought or knowledge as to genetic complications which is plagueing the “oodle” breeds. Noko was born with a badly deformed front leg, along with a litter mate who was also born with a heart murmur. Without any conscience or concern to this dogs future life she was given to an elderly couple. Out of sight out of mind.
Noko remained in this home for several months without any intervention from these people nor their vet as to the impact and pain this dog was enduring. Due to sickness in the family she was then placed on Facebook “ free to another home “ Noko then spent several weeks in her next home, at times on a chain and sometimes in a cold dark shed because she was too affectionate and needy for her new owners. Again she was up for rehoming, this is where we stepped in not being able to ignore this girls right to a loving warm home and appropriate medical intervention. On arrival Noko was immediately taken to our vets for an assessment and it was then decided that her front leg be amputated due to pain and bleeding when she tried to play.
Nothing really prepared us for the 2 weeks post op and her level of recovery. After a few days she developed and infection and fluid build up, days went by of sleeping and not wanting to eat at all despite antibiotics and constantly having her wound drained. We started to wonder whether noko would ever play again, let alone want to play again. When she was able we started taking her out on small walks and outings to try and lift her mood. Slowly but surely the sun started to shine for this little girl and she has not looked back. Noko has recently started swimming at a heated dog pool to strengthen her remaining 3 legs, which she is starting to enjoy. Nokos medical expenses have not been cheap nor is her ongoing care so for this reason we are fundraising to help pay for for her past and present medical expenses which are now into several thousand dollars.
Too many of these designer breeds are ending up in rescue due to the fact of overbreeding without knowledge or consequence, so if you are deciding to head off to a puppy farm to purchase your cute fluffy puppy, please think twice into the cruelty that you are promoting, and rescue a little dog like Noko who has all the love in the world to give.
