Beautiful Hercules is a Ridgeback x Dogue de Bordeaux pup, who joined us in a critical state after suffering a fall down a flight of stairs and breaking the growth plate in his front leg. His owners rushed him to their vet where his leg was immobilized to prevent him from hurting it further and he was immediately put on heavy pain relief. Unfortunately his heart broken owners were unable to afford the extensive specialist surgery that he now needed, as it would cost thousands. Hercules' options were specialist surgery or euthanasia, and no one wanted to see such a beautiful young soul put to sleep. Thankfully the vets recommended our rescue as an alternative, and once we heard the situation we of course agreed to take him in to care.
Hercules spent the night on pain relief sleeping soundly with some of our other special needs dogs in care. The next day he was straight to the orthopedic specialists at QVS to discuss options for his surgery. Hercules required pins and screws placed into his leg to hold everything together to ensure it would continue to grow in the correct pattern. As Hercules is currently in a critical growth period it was essential this was done in a way that ensures his leg can now grow as naturally as possible.
Hercules spent several days post surgery under the care of QVS vets and nurses who took wonderful care of him through his initial recovery. After a few days in hospital he rejoined us in foster care. Herc is currently under strict crate rest and has to be kept extremely quiet/on low activity for 6-8 weeks whilst he recovers. As you can imagine this is NOT easy for a large breed puppy who is of the very strong opinion that he is ok and wants to play! It will be a long recovery and not a particularly easy one but we have hopes Hercs will be able to return to a normal puppy in months to come.
The specialist surgery Hercules received was discounted for us but still extremely expensive due to the quality of the hardware (pins and screws) used and of course the time needed for such a fiddly procedure. Whilst we are so happy we were able to provide Hercules with the life saving surgery he desperately needed, the cost of this procedure has really hurt the funds we use to help the animals in our care. We don’t ask often but we do really need some assistance to help us pay this huge bill. We currently still owe $2500 for Hercules' surgery. If you can spare some dollars to help Hercules, and to help SHARI, we would be ever so thankful <3
